秋の京都をウォーキング

前記事１０月２７日の、哲学の道から法然院へと歩いた日の
スナップ写真です。
哲学の道を歩いて、南禅寺へと来ました。
青もみじの中に見えるのは、重要文化財の三門。

「三門」とは、「山門」とも表されますが、仏道修行で悟りに至る為に
透過しなければならない三つの関門を表す、空、無相、無作の
三解脱門を略した呼称だそうです。開創当時のものは文安四年の火災で焼失しました。
現在の三門は寛永５年(1628)に再建したもので、禅宗様式で建てられた圧倒的な存在感です。
また歌舞伎「楼門五三桐」の石川五右衛門の伝説でも有名な三門です。

こちらは、南禅寺境内を横切る赤煉瓦の「水路閣」。

琵琶湖疎水を上部に流す陸橋で、古代ローマ風の建築様式。
ひなびた色合いが南禅寺の古めかしさと相まって、とても良い感じです。
「水路閣」はインスタ映えする人気スポットとして、沢山の方が写真撮られていました。

南禅寺を後にして、鹿ケ谷通りから白川通りを経て
真如堂近くの迎称寺（こうしょうじ）へと来ました。
土塀に咲く萩の花が風情を感じます。

非公開のため寺内には入れませんが、土塀と萩の景色は、
趣のある秋景色です。

真如堂へと入りました。


まだ青もみじが殆どですが、これからの朝晩の冷え込みで
色付いて来そうです。

京都観光で、行きたい所が近くに点在する場合は、ウォーキングを兼ねて徒歩での移動もお勧めです。
この日、哲学の道⇒法然院⇒南禅寺⇒迎称寺⇒真如堂への歩数は9300歩。
距離は７．４キロでした。

「哲学の道」から「法然院」へと歩く

《哲学の道の歴史》
10月27日、左京区の哲学の道から法然院へと歩きました。
哲学の道の歴史ですが、1890年（明治23年）に琵琶湖疏水が完成した際に、管理用道路として設置された道でした。
当初は、芝生が植えられている程度の小路でしたが、この小路を散策する人が徐々に増えて来ました。
その後、このエリアには文人が多く住むようになり、その文人の方達の散策の道にもなり
「文人の道」とも呼ばれていたそうです。
京都大学の哲学者・西田幾多郎や田辺元らが好んで散策したことから「哲学の小径」といわれたり
「散策の道」「思索の道」「疏水の小径」などと呼ばれました。
時を経た、1972年（昭和47年）地元住民が保存運動を進める際に、この小路の名称を「哲学の道」と決め、
その後は多くの方に親しまれ現在に至っています。

哲学の道の距離は、若王子橋から銀閣寺橋までの約1.5km区間です。
哲学の道は、春には桜、秋には紅葉が楽しめる散歩道で
水面に映る、桜や紅葉も美しいです。
哲学の道周辺の紅葉ですが、ほんの一部に紅葉が見られるものの
まだ殆どに緑色が多くこれからと言う感じです。
ウェザーニューズの通り、11月半ば頃からが彩りの季節かと思います。

当初の哲学の道は、砂利道の散策路でしたが、1987年（昭和53年）には廃止された市電の軌道敷石を転用して、
歩行者が歩きやすいように敷石が並べられました。
また、哲学の道の付近には神社仏閣が多数点在していて、これらを巡る散策路にも利用されています。
南には、南禅寺や永観堂。若王寺橋の付近に熊野若王子神社があり、
北には、光雲寺、大豊神社、霊鑑寺、安楽寺、法然院、銀閣寺があり
ウォーキングを好む外国人観光客にも人気の道です。

《哲学の道》へのアクセス

〇京都駅から哲学の道までのアクセスは、バスが一番かと思います。
（京都駅から、市バス5、17系統または100系統）
電車で行くには最寄り駅からが離れているので、あまりお勧め出来ません。
また、車でのアクセスですが、哲学の道付近には駐車場は幾つかありますが、
紅葉観光の季節には、直ぐに満車となります。

哲学の道から法然院へと入りました。
法然院は、法然上人が弟子の住連と安楽と共に六時礼讃を唱えて、念仏三昧の別行を修められた草庵の旧跡です。

趣きのある茅葺屋根の山門です。

山門をくぐり、石段下りて書院へ続く参道からの写真です。
参道の左右には、心身を清めて浄域に入ることを意味する白砂壇があります。
縦7ｍ横3ｍの白砂壇には、季節の模様が、お坊様によって定期的に描かれています。
砂紋模様は、水紋　波　渦　葉　花・・・など

法然院は散策自由で、朝の6時から夕方4時まで拝観出来ます。

これからの朝晩の寒暖差で徐々に色づいてきます。

《もうすぐ始まる紅葉》

紅葉は、最低気温が8度以下の日が続くことで、葉が緑から黄色やあかね色に変化することを言います。
10月後半からの最低気温が、5～6度になると一気に進むと言われています。

京都の紅葉が鮮やかなのは、盆地という地形と昼夜の寒暖差が大きいことや、
適度な湿度のある事などがあげられています。

今年の京都の紅葉予想が、ウェザーニューズに載っていました。
予想では、10月後半から始まり、11半ばには多くの所で紅葉盛りとなり、
12月初旬まで楽しめるとのことです。
もうすぐ始まる、紅葉の季節が楽しみです。

遊郭建築と下町レトロを思う「旧・五条楽園」を歩く

1200年の時を刻んできた京都には、歴史を残す町並みがあります。
河原町五条近くの「五条楽園」を歩いてみました。
五条楽園は、河原町五条にあります。河原町五条と言えば、牛若丸と弁慶の出会いの場所として語り継がれている
「五条大橋」がある場所です。
写真の←左方向に下がって行きます。
このエリアは、鴨川に隣接し高瀬川の両岸にあたり、菊浜学区と呼ばれています。

まずは、高瀬川沿いにある「源融」（げんゆう）の木。
源融の木のあるこの場所は、かつて源氏物語の光源氏のモデルとされる嵯峨天皇の皇子 源融（みなもとのとおる）の邸宅「河原院」の跡があり、この榎の大樹は、この邸内にあった籬（まがき）の森の名残とされています。

高瀬川沿いの道を歩きます。
このエリアは高瀬川を中心にした五条楽園と呼ばれた遊廓の街でした。
遊郭と言えば、東京の「吉原」や、京都の「島原」といわれますが、
島原はどちらかというと高級花街でした。
対して五条楽園に来る客層はもう少し庶民的な人の多いエリアでした。

《五条楽園の歴史》

五条楽園の歴史は、江戸時代前期、鴨川西岸に開発した七条新地、六条新地、五条新地に茶屋を設けたのが始まりでした。
全盛期には遊女1000人以上いた「京女郎」の町として栄えたそうです。
時を経て、昭和33年に売春防止法が制定されると、この七条新地は大打撃を受け、
娼妓専門のお茶屋は一気に半分以下になってしまいました。

その後、七条新地は「五条楽園」と名を替えて存続して来ましたが
2010年に非合法の業者が摘発されると、このエリアの遊郭の歴史は完全に終わってしまいました。
また同年には、五条楽園入り口に掲げられていた「五條楽園」の看板も撤去されています。

色街としての機能を失った五条楽園の街。
今もここを歩くと、京の遊郭の歴史を物語るような建物を幾つか見る事が出来ます。

遊郭の特徴を残す建物といえば、数寄屋建築をベースとした木造建築で、
玄関に唐破風や、二階の手摺などがあげられます。

遊郭建築は機能的でもあり、複数の通路や階段、
客の様子を除くことができる窓など、細部にまで工夫された建築です。

狭い路地を抜けたら、鴨川に出ました。
川の奥右手には、比叡山が見えます。

こちらは高瀬川沿いの「サウナの梅湯」さん。
温泉のお湯は京都の湧き水を使用しているそうで人気の銭湯です。

この大きな建物は、五条楽園歌舞練場(五条会館)。
五条は娼妓や芸妓が入り混じった場所でしたが、五条楽園歌舞練場では、芸事のお稽古が行われていました。
建物は大正4(1915)年に建築されたもので、木造3階建てです。
五条会館には、約250人が収容できるお座敷があり本格的な舞台もあります。
現在でもイベントやコンサート等が行われています。

今、かつての五条楽園のエリアを歩くと、「いかがわしい」空気は何一つ残っていません。
生まれ変わった町には、とってもお洒落なカフェや観光客向けの宿泊施設などがあり、賑わいを見せています。
当時の面影を残した街なみは独特で、改装した料亭や宿は
海外からの観光客にも人気があります。

What You Should Never Do When Visiting the United States – 2023

It’s always exciting to be flying to the States. It’s exotic cuisine, peppy vibe, chaotic streets, globally renowned shopping, grand bonanzas and underrated romantic destinations- all make it worth every penny.

While there is so much to do in exploring a new country and new culture, certain boundaries and rules must be respected to have an entertaining holiday.

For a happy and pleasant vacation, here are some things you should never do in America.

1. Over travelling

It’s surely is tempting to leave your footprints on most of the places in the US. But here is the fun fact, the continental United States is larger than Europe, and thus, travelling everywhere in a short span could make you ready to drop. It has gorgeous cities like Arizona, Washington and New York, and wrapping all the tours in one go could overload.

2. Drink and Drive

It is not acceptable at all! If the police find you guilty, a hefty fine is issued right on your face.

3. Smoking anywhere

It is everyone’s right to breathe clean air and with this philosophy, many places in the USA have banned smoking. The workplaces and public places are witnessing a great initiative of being smoke-free.

4. Showing a middle finger

OH, It’s the USA- everything is cool here! If you are visiting with this mentality, you might get a setback. Pointing a middle finger to someone can get you killed in the USA. And we ain’t kidding. While other gestures like putting a thumbs up, having hands in the pocket or using a left hand are perfectly common.

5. Getting too much into other space

Hugs are not one of the favourite gestures of Americans. Greeting with handshakes are acceptable but don’t go forward to kissing and hugging people around. If you find the other person taking a step back, you can recognise that you are entering into his space. Avoid confrontations like peeping into other’s phones, wearing dark glasses, etc. Also, be careful of how you hold your limbs in a crowded bus or train.

6. Not tipping

It is not your local restaurant where you can skip without tipping at all. Tipping in large could be culturally sensitive in many European or Asian countries, but American culture doesn’t work that way. Whenever you are receiving any kind of service, you must tip about 12-20 per cent of the amount.

7. Silence in conversation

The uncomfortable zone builds up with Americans when a conversation is followed by a long silence. They appreciate the effort taken to have a mindful and interesting conversation. A silence of more than 3 seconds could be weird and if you are tending to have a problem with language, make use of the fillers like, Oh Sure, Yeah, And then, etc.

8. Jokes on race and gender

Few things can catch the eyes of the locals. One of these is discussing race, gender, sexuality, colour or weight. Your strong opinions on any of these topics could not end well, because someone or the other is bound to get offended. So, the best escape is simply nodding or carrying a pleasant smile.

9. Talking about politics

When you are interacting with people you know very well, taking a side could not harm. But being an outsider, sitting with a group of strangers, and taking a strong stance on a political candidate could arise issues. Nothing is better than enjoying the conversation.

10. Staring at woman

Making women uncomfortable with staring, gawking and flirting can invite the police. If you are interested, approaching them kindly and with courtesy is the key. If a woman is inviting you over, take it as a friendly invitation. Do not get misled with such requests by a female.

11. Talking about disliking football

Soccer is better than football, you say it and you get a pitiful look. You have to like football here as no one would hear anything against it. Also, nobody will take your lecture on football. Do not preach your virtues of what you know extra besides American football. Just love the game and people will love you back.

12. Comparing your country with America

Americans have a belief that their country is the best. And if you combat this thought bringing in your country and your values to be top-notch, you might get it back. So, go with the flow and do not intervene in their “we are superior” chats.

10月なかば「御室・仁和寺」

≪仁和寺の歴史≫

真言宗御室派総本山、仁和寺です。
仁和寺は世界遺産のお寺として知られ、平安時代に光孝天皇によって建て始められました。
しかし天皇は完成を見ることなく亡くなり、その子の宇多法皇によって仁和4（888）年に完成しています。

仁和寺は京都でも数少ない元号を冠するお寺で、
境内では京都三大門にも数えられる立派な二王門や、
凛とそびえる五重塔、御所の紫宸殿を移した国宝の金堂など見所に溢れています。

中門をくぐり、参道を北側へと進むと、
東側に重要文化財の「五重塔」があります。
高さ36m。寛永年間当時の建築技術を集めて造られとされるこの塔は、
各層の屋根の大きさがほぼ同じという江戸時代の建築らしい特徴を示していて、
江戸時代に建てられた五重塔の代表作といわれています。

五重塔から、さらに参道を進むと、国宝の「金堂」が見えてきます。

本尊の阿弥陀三尊像が祀られていた事から、一般的な寺院では本堂にあたりますが
仁和寺では金堂と呼ばれています。


金堂は、慶長18年（1613年）に建てられた京都御所の紫宸殿を移築したもので、
現存する紫宸殿の最古の遺構は、桃山時代の宮廷建築を今に残す貴重な建物です。

１０月半ばの仁和寺は、京都の紅葉観光の少し前で、人もそれ程多くなく
ゆっくりとお参り出来ます。

  • Located in the midst of Manhattan island, Central Park is a rectangular lush green landscape sprawling around 843 acres of land. It stretches from Fifth and Eighth Avenues on the west and east, and 59th and 106th streets on the north and south.
  • Central Park is teeming with 8 bodies of water, 58 miles of pathways, 250 acres of lawns and 136 acres of woodland.
  • Central Park is larger than the country of Monaco. The total area of Central Park is 3.41 square kilometer whereas Monaco is 2.02 square kilometer.
  • It is the USA’s most visited urban park. Approximately more than 40 million people visit the park in a year.
  • Central Park is the first public landscaped park in the USA. Though it looks very natural, it is a planned and meticulously landscaped urban park. It is believed that a village once thrived at this spot which was cleared off to pave way for construction of Central Park.
  • Central Park is home to eight manmade water bodies namely the Harlem Meer; the Loch; the Pool; the Jacqueline Kennedy Onassis Reservoir; the Turtle Pond; the Lake; Conservatory Water; and the Pond.
  • There are over 25000 trees and more than 500 species of wildlife residing within Central Park.
  • Central Park actually has 26 baseball fields, 30 tennis courts, 51 sculptures, 36 bridges & arches, 7 ornamental fountains, 2 ice-skating rinks, 125 drinking fountains, over 9,000 benches, and 1 vintage carousel.
  • Throughout the park, you will find only one straight pathway. ‘The Mall’ which stretches from 66th to 72nd Streets is the only pedestrian path that goes straight ahead flanked by rows of American elm trees. It is also one of the most photographed sites in this Park.
  • The park is known for its sculptures and installations. The famous ones that you should check out at Central Park are the 11 foot tall, bronze sculpture inspired from Alice in Wonderland and a 3500-year-old Egyptian obelisk known as “Cleopatra’s Needle’ which is also the oldest installation in Central Park.
  • Central Park has a 57-horse carousel which is one of the largest and oldest carousels of the USA. The Friedsam Memorial Carousel located at 64th Street dates 100 years back but was restored numerous time, however, the vintage charm still lingers on.
  • There are people living inside it and they proudly call it their home, A 2010 US Census revealed that nearly 25 people mention Central Park as their permanent address.
  • Central Park is a popular filming location and many movies have featured the park such as Romeo and Juliet, When Harry meets Sally, Home Alone Part 2, Avengers, and Breakfast at Tiffany’s to name a few.
  • The ‘Strawberry Field Memorial’ inside the park is a tribute to Beatles’ John Lennon and was titled after the Beatles’ song “Strawberry Fields Forever”.
  • Central Park also has a zoo. Sprawling 6.5-acre, the Central Park Zoo was started in the year 1934 and since then is home to over 1400 animals. You can have a pleasant encounter with sea lions, snow leopards, Black and White Ruffed Lemurs, Tufted Puffins, and different species of penguins among other wildlife.
  • If you are at Shakespeare Garden, there is a chance that you might see a castle on your way. The Belvedere Castle was built in 1889 and presents as a great spot to get some scenic views of Central Park.
  • The Lasker Rink in Central Park lets you enjoy a refreshing dip during warm New York summers and turns into an exciting spot to show off your skating skills during frigid winters.

見頃を迎えた彼岸花「ひがんばなの里」

《ひがんばなの里》
亀岡市曽我部町、穴太寺（あなおじ）周辺に広がる
「ひがんばなの里」では、彼岸花が見頃を迎えています。

田んぼの畦に沿って咲く彼岸花は、黄金色に輝く稲穂を彩る
赤い絨毯の様にも見えます。

彼岸花は，曼珠沙華（まんじゅしゃげ）のほか、灯籠花や狐花、幽霊花や死人花など、
さまざまな異名を持っています。
他にも、剃刀花や天蓋花という呼び名もあります。

彼岸花は稲作と同じ頃に渡来したと言われ、東アジア特有の植物で、
球根には他の生物を阻害する物質を出すことから、田んぼのあぜ道の雑草よけや、
墓地を野生動物から守るために、植えられたとされています。

亀岡市曾我部町の穴太の里は、日本の原風景という表現がぴったりです。
天台宗の寺院で、美しい庭園がある穴太寺も近く
田園には、稲の収穫が進む中、彼岸花の赤い色が映え
この時期ならではの、のどかな秋景色が広がっています。
